Choosing the perfect gift list

We help you choose the right gift list for your big day.

These days, compiling a wedding gift list is essential. You don’t want to run the risk of receiving ten toasters, however great they are! Now’s the time to work out just what you would like to receive, and where you should place your list.

The traditional list
Traditionally, the bride and groom should put together a list of items they’d love to receive for their home. This list is held by the bride’s mother and guests wishing to purchase something should telephone her for a copy. When a guest purchases a gift, they will then contact the bride’s mother to cross it off the list.
Great for: Couples who aren’t set on receiving things from a particular store, and mum’s who are happy to be the organiser!

The department store list
Many couples opt to have their wedding gift list held at a department store. You simply visit your chosen store and put together a list of items you would love to receive. The major benefit of this is that you can choose exactly what you would like, and all the organisation is carried out by the store itself. Guests can often purchase online or in store making it easy no matter where they live.
Great for: Couples looking for a variety of items for their home, from bedlinen to furniture.
Make time to visit: John Lewis (visit John Lewis), Debenhams (visit Debenhams) and Selfridges (visit Selfridges)

The gift company list
Similar to a department store list, these companies specialise in gift lists. The main benefit is that you can put together a varied list, with products from different suppliers – from a classic Wedgewood dinner service to a contemporary piece of art!
Great for: Couples who already live together and are looking for unique items for their home.

The alternative list
When it comes to gift lists, the world is your oyster. Why not put together a wine wedding list, a list of plants and shrubs for your garden, or even a charity list?
Great for: Couples who have all they need for their home, or who would like to donate to charity.
Make time to visit: Oxfam (visit Oxfam), Berry Bros and Rudd (visit Berry Bros), The Wedding Garden Company (visit The Wedding Garden Company)

The honeymoon list
If you’re dreaming of a fabulous honeymoon but your budget doesn’t quite stretch far enough, why not ask for honeymoon contributions for your wedding gift list? Guests could even buy particular treats such as dinner on the beach, or a diving trip.
Great for: Couples who want the honeymoon of a lifetime.
Make time to visit: Trailfinders (visit Trailfinders), Honey Money (visit Honey Money)
